Have you ever wondered about how far Facebook and Instagram have become?
We have encountered and used these social media websites in our ways. Whether it is to keep in touch with our loved ones or showcase your business, they have grown to become an integral part of our lives. In this article, let us look back on Facebook and Instagram.
History of Facebook
Mark Zuckerberg, while he was studying at Harvard University, launched the social media site in 2004. Back then, its name was TheFacebook. The site’s original purpose was a digital version of Harvard’s student directories.
Other educational institutions in the US and Canada heard about this, influencing their release there. Two years later, this became public under the name Facebook. Since then, there are 2.45 billion active monthly users on that platform.
History of Instagram
Meanwhile, Instagram came out of Michel Kriger and Kevin Systrom’s heads in 2010. The idea came to Systrom while they were on vacation in Mexico. Its origin is a multi-feature social platform focused on location sharing called Burbn.
Systrom then suggested adding photo uploads as a feature, but Krieger said that even his iPhone 4 could not take great pictures. The former suggested adding photo filters, and both of them got to work.
Since then, they have worked on the platform while getting $500,000 in seed funding until its 2010 release. It was available for iOS users since October of that year. In April 2012, Facebook bought it for $1 billion and released a version on Android. By 2018, they have 1 billion monthly active users.
